Purpose
The purpose of the Gensler LA office transformation was to rethink the layout, functionality, and appearance of space, addressing the need for private, focused work areas within a flexible, communal environment. With a growing workforce and post-pandemic work preferences, the redesign aimed to create versatile spaces that support both individual concentration and team collaboration.
Solution
Gensler's "next generation" of designers and strategists spearheaded the redesign of the third floor. The project focused on developing a "kit-of-parts" that included sit-stand workstations, communal tables, booths, material layout islands, and most notably, custom privacy pods developed in partnership with Studio Other
"Our goal was to create a space that balanced the need for privacy and focus with the benefits of a communal, flexible work environment. The privacy pods were designed to provide a secluded, comfortable space for heads-down work while maintaining the office's residential feel," says Charlotte Wiederholt, Studio Other President.
The design process began with studying traditional cubicles and adapting them to support a flexible environment. A cardboard mockup of the privacy pod was set up in the office, allowing employees to experience and provide feedback on the concept. This crowdsourcing method played a crucial role in finalizing the design.
The privacy pod featured a metal base combined with wood elements to match the office's homey feel and included Gensler's signature red color.
Results
The custom privacy pods became a standout feature of the redesigned Gensler office space, successfully meeting the need for private, focused work areas within a flexible environment.
The integration of the privacy pods, along with other flexible workstations, transformed the office into a versatile space that caters to various work preferences, enhancing both collaboration and individual productivity.
This project sets a new standard for flexible office environments, demonstrating the value of a people-focused, innovative approach to workspace design.
