Managing a crew of workers effectively is the first step in fulfilling your objectives. With a position of upper management comes responsibility and reward. One important key to being a good leader is connecting in a meaningful way with those in your charge. That means making Employee Engagement a top priority. So, just how can you step into the inner circle of your employee’s world and connect?
Here are 3 unique thoughts to consider.
1) Anticipate needs
Strive to think one step ahead of your employees and anticipate any needs. How can the office space be more accommodating and inspiring. This works to serve both of your interests. Work to fill in gaps as you see them. Employees appreciate forward thinking. You may even foresee an unexpected problem by looking ahead on the job.
2) Increase your emotional intelligence
Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and manage your emotions, as well as understand and respond appropriately to others’ emotions. Here are a few of the characteristics of individuals with high emotional intelligence:
- Empathy
- Self-awareness
- Self-control
- Self-motivation
- Interpersonal skills
- Leadership ability
Everyone is capable of increasing their emotional intelligence quotient (EQ) through study and simple exercises. Build a nurturing environment where employees feel heard and understood.
3) Be genuine
Authenticity is attractive, and it is also rare to find. Most people tend to put on a front, especially on the job. However, when people are genuinely themselves, it allows for a real connection with others. Consider what happens when a person is NOT authentic. There is a false front put up between themselves and others. You could call it a wall or a barrier. However, when that is removed and a person is authentic, he or she connects emotionally with others. Why is this important? As humans, we crave true connections. So, when you connect with your employees, trust is fostered.
