There is good news for workers in California according to seasonally adjusted numbers released by the State of California Employment Development Department (EDD) in January, 2017. From January of 2016 to January of 2017, there was an increase of 330,500 jobs, which was up 2.0 percent. A survey of 58,000 California businesses measured jobs in the economy.
A federal household survey, from a smaller sample than the employers' survey, shows the estimated number of Californians holding jobs in January of 2017 was 18,176,000, an increase of 11,000 over December of 2016 and up 267,000 from January of 2016. The number of unemployed Californians was 986,000 in January 2017, down by 13,000 over the month, and down by 90,000 compared with January of 2016.
Los Angeles County had an unemployment rate of 5 percent in December, 2016, which was down from November's 5.1 percent and down from the 6 percent of one year ago. Los Angeles County's labor force was 5,071,000 in November, and 4,831,200 were employed.
California's unemployment rate of 5.2 percent in December was down from November's seasonally adjusted 5.3 percent and down from 5.9 percent statewide in December of 2015. This rate is derived from a federal survey of 5,500 California households. The national unemployment rate rose by one-tenth of one percent in December to 4.7 percent.
