There are many considerations that go into workspace design. You have to consider the space itself and how it's set up. Where are the windows located? Is it already divided up into several rooms? Or does it consist of just one room, like a large loft? How big is it? And how many employees are you trying to fit into it?
You have to combine your vision for your workspace with these practical considerations in order to get an aesthetically pleasing but functional workspace. But in order to do this, you have to be clear about what exactly your vision is.
Look Back on Your Previous Workspaces
You must have seen a workspace that you really liked, either recently or sometime in the past. Think back on all the places where you've worked. Which ones did you like and which ones did you not like? And if you can remember ones that you really liked, think about what made you like them. Were they comfortable? Organized? Well-lit? Homey?There are many different types of workspaces. Some have a playful, active feel which makes you want to be more creative. Others are relaxing and stress-free and make you feel like you're working from home.
Look at Images in Magazines or Online
If you haven't actually worked in a place that you loved going to work to, then you can try another tactic: pull out images of workspaces that you like, either from magazines or on the internet. There are a number of images of this type available. If you look at something and it piques your interest, save it for future reference.
Once you've created a file of images, go through them and try to figure out what they all have in common. This will give you an idea of what type of workspace you'd like to create for yourself and your employees.
Consider Comfort and Practicality
Remember to also be practical when you're designing a workspace. Some spaces look great on paper, but you might not feel entirely comfortable working in them. So if comfort is important to you, then you might have to skip those molded chairs in bright colors that look so appealing on paper and instead go with more comfortable chairs that will be easier on your back.
