Hines, a global real estate investment, development, and property manager, recently opened its doors to West Edge, a transformative, mixed-use development, situated within the creative heart of West Los Angeles, offering a luxury living experience and a dynamic office and retail environment.

Design firm Rapt Studio and Hines engaged Studio Other to provide a majority of the ancillary furniture, including accessories and sourced vintage rugs, as well as a large custom live-edge table for their office space.

The Goal

Hines wanted the workspace to be eclectic with no uniforming and a mix of wood colors. They were looking for bold and unique pieces made of authentic materials with varying textures to create a homey and warm environment.

Ancillary Furniture Curation at Antique Stores

Working closely with Rapt and our own ancillary specialists, we set out to source unique pieces that matched the look and feel of their mood board-style renderings. Our team met with the designer and client at an antique-store and handpicked vintage items that we wanted to purchase or draw inspiration from. This outing helped visualize the sizing and look that we were going for, and was successful in curating beautiful accessories and vintage rugs. Additionally, we collaborated with a local Culver City manufacturer, Big Daddy's Antiques, to create a custom metal-work table with salvaged concrete pillar legs. Over the course of several months of gathering samples, colors, and swatches, we all agreed on an ancillary furniture collection that was rich in texture and history.

Custom Live-Edge Table Sourced from Portland, Oregon

Working with our live slab vendor, we hand selected a raw live-edge slab that was cut from a 100-year-old log salvaged from a family farm in Portland, Oregon. The tree had been dead for several years, with clear signs of its end-of-life cycle, and a new tree was planted in the exact location of the previous one. We chose this particular slab for its size, but the client fell in love with the backstory, and is even making a special plaque for it.

We worked with the vendor to test out several types of resin to fill in cracks and holes to make the tabletop smooth to the touch. The finished tabletop is 192 inches in length and seats up to 20 people. Allowing the live-edge slab to take its rightful spotlight, we completed the table with metal legs.

“As we move forward into a new era of work, our vision was to build an inspired office that encourages dynamic collaboration and creativity,” said Douglas H. Metzler, CEO of Hines’ West Region. “Our West Region headquarters offers a new level of flexibility in how and where people work, enhancing the overall employee experience. Ultimately, West Edge embodies the future of office, fostering an environment where people want to work and socialize.”
